December

Even though I am late, I'it try to do it. I need to make my own holiday fun.

1.Leave a comment to this post!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows

[personal profile] molly_may gave me K, which made me think for quite some time. Somehow I couldn't remember enough characters started with K that I wanted to write about.

But here is my final selection:

1)Korben Dallas. It is, just another shade of the same character played by Bruce Willis since before time, and I have some issues with him, just like with the whole movie Fifth Element, but I still love him and find him one of the best iterations. It probably comes from the fact that we watched that movie so many times that he is somewhat an old friend, who is occasionally cool, and occasionally ridiculous, but fun to have around.
2)Kara Thrace. I haven't watched much of BSG, but one cannot miss the awesomeness of Starbuck or the trace she left on our civilization.
3)Kate Sutton, the heroine of The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope. I love that girl. She is stubborn, proud, fair and intelligent in the best way. She reasons very believably for her age and time. She wins by refusing to take the seemingly easy way instead of the right way.
4)Kenzi of the Lost Girl. She is smart, loyal, brave and fun. She is a great friend. She is also Russian, and it matters somewhat, but not a huge deal and it doesn't make her a ridiculous stereotype. I didn't even realized how much I needed such character on TV.
5)Kaylee Frye. I almost didn't include her, since she is a bit too good to be true, with endless cheerfulness and magical rapport with engines. Maybe she is the luckiest with the early cancellation – she didn't have time to break. Still it is difficult not to like her – I love watching competence and optimism.

I finished reading Mindy Kaling's book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). I don't watch The Office and I didn't really know anything about her. But I liked the cover and some excerpts, and I picked it up from the library and read in three days. It is a very enjoyable book even if you don't care at all about the author. The easy style, the right type of sarcastic humor, the unapologetically strong opinions on everything from pea-coats to romantic comedies. I loved it.

The most unexpected result of my reading was that I decided to write a memoir myself. Yes, I know it sounds very silly – I am not accomplished in anything, but I had some interesting times doing it, that I might as well share.

I know I won't have much of an audience, but that's not important. I want to right it for myself – to channel my hoarding tendencies into something useful, and for my son, or any other descendants I might have someday. I'd love them to pretend their matriarch was not a complete loser, and my stories might help them in it.

I also want to write it for my ancestors, because how else can I express my love for my family except by telling their stories.

And deep in my heart, I think, I've always wanted to write a memoir. From the early age that I remember I had a second voice in my head (not, not that kind of voice) describing everything I do in a dispassionate tone of an academic biographer. Of course, as I child, I thought, I shall become famous first, but now I realize that there is nothing to wait for any longer. And no point in losing more time. I am not doing anything useful anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] molly_may gave me those names as a part of these meme:

Comment and I will give you ten actors and ten actresses. Then post in your Livejournal with your favorite films of theirs.

The thing is, my movie watching is weird. During my University years I watched whatever happen on TV, but it was in Russia, so the selection of what was on TV was pretty random. And here and now I hardly ever watch serious dramas. So my movie choices tend to lean toward cheesy. Enjoy!

from the blogging ether:

What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say, "I should write that entry about XYZ I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll [POSSIBLY!]write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on alfalfa, favourite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc.

I guess I also cannot name 10 couples I shipped with passion.

I haven't watched much TV in the past five years, and even the shows I did watch and enjoyed left me lukewarm at best. Maybe it's me, maybe it's them, but here it is. I watched quite a lot of TV in the nineties, but but now I hardly remember enough passion for ten ships...

Anyway, here is my list
1) Buffy/Spike. Right from the beginning of my being a fan of the show (which was a rerun of Intervention already in 2002), I loved them - as a couple and as separate people. I still love them - the fire and need to read fanfiction are gone, but the warmth stays with me. Deep in mind they met again, and live and fight together for years now. ;)
2)Scully/Mulder. Well, the first time I saw them - mid-nineties, back in Russia, in bad pirated copy on some unknown cable channel - I had no idea what I was watching, and who they are, but I shipped them after the first ten minutes. They just belonged together.

***

I thought that I wouldn't be able to put anything close to them, but I remembered a cute British series I used to enjoy - Dempsey & Makepeace http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088503/ It was a kind of buddy cop series, if I understand the genre: she was a British policewoman, he was an American cop, and sparks were so strong, that actors actually got married (according to IMDB).

I am sure that there was something else, but since I cannot remember anything, I evidently didn't ship very passionately.

***

Among the ships I dislike I don't have many passionate hatreds either.

I don't like Buffy/Angel after season 2. It's not that I think they were good for each other before, but I like the story. After that the story got boring and annoying, and the insistence that their love is the truest love of all was made me question their sanity. I mean I understand why Buffy clang to her love for Angel. I even can understand Angel's feelings. I don't understand what was romantic about it.

Other Buffyverse couples - I just don't care that much about them. They were, then they weren't - okay, whatever. I like the characters, but don't care much about couple-ness.

AtS - the romantic couples are so screwed over there, that it is impossible to ship for me. Ok, Angel/Darla are great, but it's hard to ship them either - I don't really hope that they resolve their difficulties, silly kids, and live happily ever after.

Fred/Wes is the one that annoy me the most. Not because they were wrong for each (they were wrong), not because they were infuriating on-screen (they were, but too short time), but because they never really got a chance to explore how bad are they for each other. It was all about Wesley's pain: he loved the girl, he lost the girl, but it was never addressed that the girl was different from a shining paragon he loved.

Come to think, Gunn/Gwen and Wes/Virginia were fine, but too short-lived to feel anything about them.

I can't possibly walk by a Buffy meme without joining in...

When you see this, post another Buffy quote in your LJ. Let's see how long this can go on.

from What's My Line Part 2 (Season 2)

BUFFY: (to Kendra, fighting another vamp) Switch!

SPIKE: I'd rather be fightin' you anyway.

BUFFY: Mutual.

Happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] jonesiexxx! I tried to send greetings on Sunday via thoughts, but not sure whether they reached you - mostly all my thoughts eventually turn to the baby...

Now, my Top Fives - I am posting what I have now, soon (hopefully) to be completed.

For [livejournal.com profile] swsa: Top 5 Buffy quotes )
For [livejournal.com profile] swsa: Top 5 AtS episodes )

If you feel like suggesting more Top Fives - go ahead. Give me something to post about. ;)

First of all, the happiest of birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] thedeadlyhook!

And since I got some of you answer this for me, I should post the thing myself:

Comment and I'll--
1 - Tell you why I friended you.
2 - Associate you with something. A fandom, a song, a color, a piece of fruit. SOMETHING.
3 - Tell you something I like about you.
4 - Tell you a memory I have of you.
5 - Associate you with a character/pairing.
6 - Ask something I've always wanted to know about you. (Or else I'll just ask a random question. I reserve that right.)
7 - Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
8 - In return, you must spread this disease in your LJ.

You don't really have to spread the disease though.

Happy International Labour Day! - to those who care about such things ;)

I've changed my LJ name to a Russian phrase that will take an hour to explain. But I wanted to have it, so it will stay for a while. Pity that the best jokes cannot be properly translated...

Every time I met with the first day of any new month, my first thought: Hmmm, Where did the previous month go? I guess I am not that bright. ;-p

and finally, meme:

If there is someone on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Because you, guys, like, totally rule!

[livejournal.com profile] sweet_ali asked and I answer:

1)As a lover of books, what do you think of the label "Chick Lit"? Do you find it beneficial or damaging, etc?

I don't see anything beneficial in the label "Chick lit". As I understand, the books that are called "chick lit" are supposed to be light reading for modern women that can be fluffy and funny, yet does not insult their intelligence. Yet the name for it is... disparaging. It feels to me that, anyway, even it may be the language issues. The term "chick lit" screams "Don't take me seriously!" - and so people don't, which leads to less attention to quality of writing and more attention to glitter on the cover. I do like the books "chick lit" wants to be, but I don't find them on the "chick lit" table in bookstores. I am way more likely to find them un-labeled or in the fantasy sections.

2)Tell me a positive and a negative in regards to the discussion that occurs in fandom.

Positive: Occasionally they are interesting. They add to my perception and understanding of the matters discussed, even when I have absolutely different views on the discussed subject. They somewhat changed the way I am watching TV and reading the books - I still like and dislike things the way I always did, but now I can explain "why" and "what". I met cool people through the fandom discussions and made friends.

Negative: The discussions tend to go circles, can be (and too often are) vicious and stupid. They suck out the time, energy and life out of the participants.

3)There's a fire, pets and people are all safe, what are three things you need to grab before saving yourself.

My very first thought? OMG Books! But getting serious: first of all the documents, then warm clothes, then information (as in palm, laptop, backup disks.)

4)What is one thing you try to do to pamper yourself?

I buy myself flowers. I do more or not necessarily that, but you asked for one thing. :)

5)Tell me a song that means something to you.

I often get attached to a song, because it reminds me of something, puts me in a certain mood, or steers my thoughts to a certain direction. The first song that I came up with though – Bezobraznaya Elsa (Ugly Elsa) by Krematoriy - brings to my mind a whole 3-d picture of March 1991 and 15-year old me. The dirty thawing snow in the parks, the missed classes at school, the wind, me, singing this song to my little sister when picking her up after her figure skating practice. The time when 27 seems to be very advanced years…

Ugly Elsa, the Queen of Flirting
With the jug of pure alcohol I am hurrying to you.
We are 27 now, and everything that happened
We can’t wash out from our souls...

Now, if you want me to ask you questions, here is how it works:

01- Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
02- I will respond by asking you five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.
03- You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
04- You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
05- When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

avrelia: (Too Fond of Books)
If you always wanted to know something about me, or just feeling curious or bored, there is this meme, and you can ask me my Top Five List of anything.

I may not have it, but you can still ask - maybe I'll invent one just for you!

In a more substantive stuff, I am in love with a book - Freedom and Necessity by Emma Bull and Steven Brust. It got me immediately when the characters started discussing Hegel - and then it was getting better and better: main characters I love, revolutionary underground, mystery and intrigue, Engels (actually as a character in the action), more Hegel with Kant and Hume, and the lovely XIX-century epistolary style.

The genre is impossible to define - it is not fantasy, not really a historical fiction or a philosophy textbook... But then, probably all really good book defy the strict genre definitions.

Reading about Engels - as the regular character - seems kind of strange. They (I rarely can think of him in singular, without Marx attached as a Siamese brain-twin, even though I read each of them) feel like a older relative - that you know were young and did what all humans do, but never think about it. they are way too memorial. And this is one of reasons I enjoy seeing Engels there so much!

But the main characters (Susan, Kitty, James and Richard are delightful, and I savor every moment with them, too. they are far from perfect - they have their quirks and vices and secrets, and they can be difficult, but they are never annoying and flat.

As seen at [livejournal.com profile] elisi and [livejournal.com profile] automatedalice_

If there is at least one person in your life who you consider a close friend, and who you would not have met without being part of an online fandom, post this sentence in your journal.

Because it is so true.
