I’ve just posted my entry for the reunion flashficathon, and now I am just being poetic about how much fun it was to write. Honestly, what prevents me from writing more? Oh, yes, the lack of organization skills. All that time I was so sure I won’t be able to write in English – and I kind of did it. Yay me! Of course, the jury is still out on quality of the writing, but I definitely make less mistakes now.

Of course, I never thought I am going to write fanfiction, but here I am – the reunion flashficathon proved to be an irresistible temptation – as a challenge, and for its surprise element. My pairing was great – Willow/Giles which I like, but which isn’t too popular, and provides a lot of uncharted territory. Unexpectedly, Giles occupied the POV character place, so I had to follow him. I also was surprised when the story turned to be told in the present tense. I tried to change to the more usual past, but it worked better for me in present. I hope, it will work for you, too.

We’ve just seen Kill Bill v.2 – vacations that my husband is on are a swell thing. If only they were paid vacation – but, you know, unfortunately, we are not paid for not working.
Though, come to think, may be I should be paid for not working on nuclear reactors. Not that I ever plan to.

The movie – I loved the movie. It was a very distinctly different from the first one, but as good as it. There was no over-the-top violence, not fountains of blood, no bubbling excitement and rage – everything was muted, but emotions were no less strong. May be more strong, actually, because here the focus was on people, on who and why, and less on action itself. The sword around which there was so much fuss last time wasn’t really used here. Yes, it is talked about a lot, it still has a place in the story, but it is more of a symbol for the just vengeance – vengeance as a double-edged sword itself. Yet vengeance – if it is justified never is a clean cut – it leaves others with the right and desire to exact vengeance, it doesn’t fill the void in the avenger. The Bride, so coolly efficient in the first part, stumbles and fails - though eventually wins her fight.
We got the reasons – for the massacre, and the vengeance, we’ve got the back-story, we’ve got characterization. Uma Turman was fantastic – in all the pieces of story, before and after. But the last scenes – when she comes to kill Bill, and find her daughter alive, when she talks to Bill, when she lies on the bathroom floor in a motel, she is magnificent. The image of happy family, welcoming the long-lost mother seems rather disturbing when one knows what is behind the façade of reunited parents.
Bill tells her that she is a natural-born killer – and she admits she enjoyed the killing. But it is not all to her, and she makes the choice to stop, but she is forced back. And she goes back – to fight for herself, and for was taken away – from her and the innocent people in the church.
Everybody make their choices - O-Ren made hers – after her parents were killed, after she killed their killer, Bill, Budd, Elle, Bride… What choices two little girls will make when it’ll come to it?

Another question is what makes us human? Eating food with the chopsticks? Something else?
Love and hate, regrets, respect, pain and hope are interlacing, so sometimes it is really hard to tell one from another. And it seems oddly appropriate that Bill dies from a broken heart (broken by the mythical fighting method, which the old teacher didn’t teach anyone, but Beatrix)
There is so much more to it, and I’d love to see both parts together, I’ll probably find something else.
And the last moments, where mother and daughter are together, driving away from the previous life, are very touching. Of course, it is not a perfectly happy ending (I wouldn’t believe in such), but it has hope, and it is more then I expected.

And now (well, very soon) is off to Moscow. Probably I won’t be on-line often, so won’t be able to comment and answer comments, but will check e-mails. Back in two weeks.
