We went to see Pan's Labyrinth last weekend. And then we watched Star Wars Episode III at home. I wouldn't have noticed the common theme before, but now it seemed glaringly obvious:

Both movies are about dying in childbirth! Well, not really, but the juxtaposition was interesting. I still think that Padme's death as it happened there was an easy storytelling way out, and not necessary to the story.

on the other hand, everything, every event and character in Pan's Labyrinth seemed crucial for the story. and everything that happened was the only way it could happen - from the first moments when we hear a story of an underworld princess. and of course, we start with the picture of dying Ofelia - except we don't know it yet. But really, is there any other way for her to return to the underworld? I love how the stories of real world and fantasy world interweave with each other and influence one another. for more on this I would just refer to [livejournal.com profile] molly_may's post.

I want to add that Underworld is usually a realm of death on the one hand, on the other it corresponds with the underground resistance of the partisans in the real world. and yet, it is the real world that is the least desirable place in the story.

I was cheering for the partisans (partisans yay!) even though their story is the most schematic there -yet still I find it very satisfying. However, the story ends with the partisans victory. and it feels right. In the history, though it was the Franco regime that won and survived for many years after the WWII was over.

We both liked the movie, and I am glad we saw it, though I am not sure when I want to watch it again.

and finally, two silly Star Wars questions that keep poking in my head:

1) With the lightsabers and space travel, the technology in the Star Wars Universe seems pretty advanced. How is that no one knew Padme was carrying twins? Or, if she was hiding it from everyone save Anakin, couldn't he, being super-jedi and all that, feel the Force of two(that's apparently strong in the family) ?

2) What exactly Luke's uncle was farming on Tatooine?

1) I have no idea.

2) It was a moisture farm. Hence all the talk of "'vaporators" and such.

Thank you! I was sure someone knows it, I just never asked myself before. ;)

Hee! I think that's a theme that would only have been noticed by a pregnant woman.;) Actually, now that I think about it, Pan's Labryinth is probably not the most comforting movie for an expectant mother to watch, but I'm glad you liked it anyway.

How is that no one knew Padme was carrying twins?

That would mean using the technology to deal with icky girl parts! George Lucas says "ewwwww".

couldn't he, being super-jedi and all that, feel the Force of two(that's apparently strong in the family) ?

Stop trying to use logic on the bad, bad movie!

well, I have enough of worries already to pick up some more from a movie. ;)

besides, the way the story was built there was no other way for it to go, so I expected it to happen almost from the beginning.

well, without logic it really seems much better.
