time and books
Nov. 14th, 2005 04:51 pmI live in short stretches of time – from now to then, from work day to non-workday from tonight to tomorrow, from hope to wasted time. What did I do the past weekend? Moving furniture (husband did most of the moving, anyway), studying (a little bit), eating and drinking, and walking around, and … nothing really. Feels like nothing – and that one is the better one. I have some kind of results to show: a finished assignment, a PowerPoint presentation, rearranged furniture, finished cross-stitched picture (it took me only several months).
Actually I am pretty happy about the picture – I need to frame it and find a decent place to put it, as the monument of my labour. Fittingly, there is a statue on that picture.
Even happier I am about the new bookcases – one for me and one for husband. Last year in Lj a meme was making rounds – show me your books or something like it. I could only show my carton boxes telling that where the books are. Which was true, because we didn’t unpack them after moving from Vancouver to Toronto. Now I did. Oh the surprises! I absolutely forgot what books I have – even though I had them catalogued. I have very nifty books. Oh, yes. It will take me forever to read them all – especially since I keep getting new books from library as to save money and space. A lot of books I also left in Russia, at home. Occasionally I miss them, then remind myself, that I don’t I even remember what I have, and tell myself that I definitely have to read these ones first.
The coolest thing that most of my English-language books I bought for $1 each. – I visited (sometimes volunteered) semi-annual library book sales in Richmond that had amazing book selections. Then of course we spent much more money to move the books with us.
So now I fit almost all my books in the new IKEA bookcase. I had to put them depending on size, not genre – I tried to keep “fiction” and “nonfiction” on different shelves, but without much success. Still, they look lovely there. And I am finally throwing away the old boxes.
Pictures might be forthcoming.
