I wish everyone a very happy October!

Good things that happened so far:

1)I am on vacation now.
Downsides: I’ve saddled some things to do while I am at it and some responsibility I don’t want
Up and Downsides: I am going crazy with the massive present-shopping. It starts like fun and soon descends into worries and tiredness and lack of time and money to buy everything for everyone.
2)We saw Serenity on Friday

It really is a bumpy ride.

I didn’t watch Firefly before: I’ve seen some bits and pieces, I liked them, but not the whole thing – just didn’t happen, and then I stopped trying, having decided to watch a movie first, and the see how it works for a lay person as opposed to a fan. Of course if I really were a lay person, I probably wouldn’t know about this movie at all. My husband didn’t until I told him – and he liked the movie.

There wasn’t a big bang, a giddy feeling of immediate LOVE, and the necessity to watch it again immediately. It went a quieter way into my heart – slowly but surely – I was dreaming about it and was thinking about it the whole Saturday, and I know I am gong to be a proud owner of DVD when it comes out – the series as well, when I see it at the right price ($60 is too much for me). The bits of the movie pops up in my head and asks questions and get me thinking.

I love that I didn’t know what is coming next every moment in the movie – well, apart from the fact I am aware of Whedon’s favorite things to do by now, so basically just when I was sure he is going to kill someone of the Serenity crew, Wash died.

The movie felt ragged though – partly it was the intention, I guess, and partly not – but it doesn’t feel like an advantage and the overall impression stays slightly fractured. Many images are rich and wonderful and they are staying with me, but the whole picture keeps hiding. I probably will have to see it again to catch more. ;)

I do have to say more, but I probably need more thinking, and by the way I checked the opening date in Russia – it is in two weeks, which mean I can not only tell my friends to go see it, but grabbed them and get them to the theatre. .. Hmmm… Whatever in my power to help the helpless…

I wonder how Serenity will translate, so much of Firefly's charm is in Whedon dialogue, how he turns things on their head and rides around certain genre and language conventions.

Yeah, It worries me - especially it will be dubbed most likely, not subtitled. I can survived, having seen the original, but my friends will have to have that. Except that many scenes don't need the translation and cannot be ruined by one - as the image of River after the battle...
