Vancouver Nostalgic PicSpam I
Dec. 19th, 2004 09:36 amCouple of days ago we got to “Gender Bender” in our re-watch of the season 1 of X-files. The action there (and our favorite FBA agents) goes to Steveston, Some State. Only it was not in Some state, it was in Steveston that is in Richmond, BC. I mean, I know that X-files were shot in Vancouver, so it was natural to expect to see it there, it just I haven’t caught any sights as familiar as that one on X-files before.
Which brings me to the promised nostalgia picspam.
Our move to Canada was a haphazard and kind of adventurous one. My husband out of the blue got a job offer as a programmer from Canada, we thought, “Why not?” and ended up living in Richmond, BC for three years.
I am getting a lot of questions on comparison between British Columbia and Ontario, and Vancouver and Toronto, and where is better to live. And I cannot answer this question – where is better to live, because it is not so much about objective goodness - it is about what is better for me, for you, or for that guy on the bench next to you.
Objectively – Vancouver is a good place to live, the third or the second best according to the important international organization, which name I am too lazy to look up right now.
Yet I just don’t want to live there. And that is the embarrassing secret, on par with the realization that this perfect person just leaves you cold.
Please understand: I like BC, some days I am missing it painfully, I miss people and places, and strawberry cheesecakes from Save-on-Foods, and my pots with clematis on the balcony, and the tides, and the view on the mountains, and the library sales. The list is pretty long. I still remember what I have to take to get from highway 91 to New Westminster and not in Surrey. There are a lot of things where I prefer BC to Ontario, but I really, really don’t want to live there. Why? I felt wrong there, out of place, and whatever I was wearing – overdressed. I don’t have any good reasons, honestly. It is one of the best places where I don’t want to live, but often miss.
I’ll start with the view on downtown from the Stanley Park.

Here is more of the downtown and bonus – I, roller-skating.

The Vancouver national sport – putting rocks on each other. Does it have an actual name? Anyway, people manage to build considerable structures like this.

My favorite corner – Grenville and Broadway.

Same corner, different view.

Richmond, #3 Road – famous by its traffic jams. You couldn’t tell by this picture though.

Save on Foods and Drugs supermarket. Why don’t they have it here? I miss it.

Our street. Low-rise apartment buildings hidden in the greenery.

My favorite place: Tsawwassen, Boundary Bay Regional Park. Nothing but sand and grass, th shrubs, the waters of the bay, the distant mountains, and the quiet. Love, love, love.

That’s it for the first installment of the Vancouver PicSpam. There going to be, because British Columbia is Beautiful, and we made a lot of pictures.
