What is the difference between “pigeon” and “dove”?

Remember we had a pigeons’ nest on our balcony? We don’t anymore. A baby pigeon was born, and grew, and grew, and grew…
He (or she) was a funny little fellow, running around the balcony, hiding in the corners, producing the increasing amounts of noise and excrements, plus the adult pigeons were cooing all the time, and decided to have more babies, so the first one wouldn’t be bored… And we could not either sleep or go to the balcony anymore. Beside we were concerned that pigeons would never leave…

And having waited till the baby learn to fly, we flied him out of our place. He flied to the balcony two of three storeys down. Yet I still feel very evil and hoping that the baby pigeon will do well.
I am so silly. ::sigh::
