For the January writing meme , [personal profile] selenak asked Now, if something were to be made based on Wilkie Collins' books - those you've read - how would his characters get on with another? Would Marian Halcombe solve the Moonstone mystery by just asking Rachel some pertinent questions early on? Lydia GWilt vs Count Fosco: who would win? Would they team up only to backstab each other? And so forth....

I was supposed to post it on Jan.4, but only managed it now...

I haven’t read Wilkie Collins in many years, so my memory of all things that were not Woman in White and Moonstone is rather shaky, but I agree that they have a feeling of a common universe. I can easily imagine Marian Halcombe getting utterly bored with the role of a “good aunt” she assigned for herself and starting her own bureau of investigations, helping bring peace and justice to those who had little hope of those. She would secure funding from Lady Verinder, she would find a comrade in arms in Valeria Woodville (of The Law and the Lady), she would occasionally employ Magdalen Vanstone as her less than scrupulous field agent. And Lydia Gwilt would provide a more fun nemesis than Count Fosco. (I am not sure how it would all work, timeline-wise, but suppose it will).

It is also fun to imagine them venturing beyond the Collins world into other worlds of classical 19th century fiction. I think Collins’ characters would do really well in Trollope’s universe. I thing a mash-up of Woman in White and the Barchester Towers would absolutely work. I want Signora Neroni messing up with both Percival Glide and Walter for the fun of it. I want Mrs. Proudie and Mrs. Grantly uniting against Count Fosco.

Out of non-English literature – Balsac already has his own universe with characters traveling between the books freely. Leo Tolstoy’s books are too tightly controlled by the author, and I don’t wish anyone to live in the Dostoyevsky’s world.

But I do think that lives of Turgenev’s characters could be improved by involvement of some of the Collins’ characters, Jules Vernes’s universe is already welcoming for adventurers.

Well, I still have a whole month ahead that I can write something. Please ask for more!

Oh, I love the idea of Marian opening her own bureau of investigations! And agreed on all your choices, especially that of Magdalen as the occasional less than scrupolous field agent.

I want Signora Neroni messing up with both Percival Glide and Walter for the fun of it.

OMG yes!

I want Mrs. Proudie and Mrs. Grantly uniting against Count Fosco.

"The Bishop thinks, and I entirely agree, that this many mice in the close proximity of human beings are lacking hygiene and are not to be endured, Count!"

Jules Vernes’s universe is already welcoming for adventurers.

Indeed, and I would love for any of the Collins ladies to take part in a Verne-ian adventure!
