What is making the perfect little egg crate forms there in the last one?

I am impressed by the snow--the last time I was on the east coast, they were just starting to dig out from a storm with only a little bit less snow than this one dumped. I was boggled then! It's really amazing--I hope you don't end up with too much damage.

that's the trellis over the deck, as seen from the second floor. The same trellis you can see on the deck picture.

we didn't have any damage, just lots of snow and a short Internet outage. Other places were less lucky, but nothing major as far as I know.
