Female lawyers of the world, unite
Jun. 15th, 2010 09:06 pmOne might think that lawyers don't suffer from sexist practices. Because, they, you know, lawyers! Spent years and such educating themselves about rights and stuff.
Hah!
Big Law Firm fires several associates on (or just after) maternity leave. 'Cause, you know, they work less. The comments are even better - more scope.
And here is a story of a Toronto lawyer who did choose work over personal life, except it didn't help her. Was she just a bad lawyer? Or a woman? The court will decide.
And then of course, there are personal anecdotes from here and there that make me sad and feeling like gnawing my leg off to get out. I talked to my friend in Russia about it, and she agrees it is way worse over there, in part because people don't feel that fighting will help them much. After the circumstances of me leaving my employment in Toronto I readily believe that people think that they will be better off not fighting sexual harassment or sexism.
My first interview with a blatant sexist long time ago I left laughing - I couldn't believe such idiots existed! Now I don't laugh - they exist and they win time after time.
Of course, it is not as bad as the plight of women in many other places. Whom we are kidding? A lot of women cannot even dream to become lawyers. But still...
Why did I ever choose to study law? Or, yes, I liked justice. hehehe
