I probably am boring and over-sensitive

but there are things that annoy me to no end. Maybe it is a cautionary tale about dangers of random browsing of the Internets: don't stray from the path, there might be idiots...

I went to Alternative history forums (alternativehistory.com, I believe - don't want to dig up a link) following a link to some maps of zombie apocalypse. I have nothing against a good zombie apocalypse, as long as it doesn't really happen of course.

After seeing rather inventive maps I wanted to see what else is there, and of course, posts with words "Russian" in the name do tend attract my attention. So I clicked.

People in that particular post discussed an amusing hypothesis: what if in 2012 all ethnic Russians all die?

Is it weird that I am having serious problems with this idea? I kind of want to wash it off my brain, but maybe I am overly sensitive, and amusing possibility of disappearance of nations and ethnicities is a fun intellectual pastime? Or I shouldn't judge people, because they don't mean it seriously? Or who would miss Russians anyway, they are all evil?

I am a boring stuck up with no sense fun...

I don't think you're being sensitive. There's something squicky about picking on one ethnicity, even more than the “what if all men died” or “what if all women died” themes, because those raise really interesting issues about gender. All killing off one ethnicity does is…destroy a group of people. The same genetics would still exist in the remaining population, the art, philosophy and culture would exist in books and other media, so the prospect focuses on people without creating any ideas to examine.

I could get behind "suppose Russia is empty (or full of zombies) and everything is up for grabs" discussion. It's not fun for me, but I can see the possibilities.

but killing (or imagining dead) people based on their ethnicity - I thought it is well-established as in really bad taste.

What a weird and offensive thing for people to spend their time imagining. I don't think you're being overly sensitive at all.

Ага, так тут тоже такое бывает... Очень интересно.

Ну, что ж всё правильно, страна большая, людей много, они разные... Ну, и строго говоря, именно такая форма "русофобии" -- в виду гипотезы, по-моему, существенно слабее той формы антиамериканизма, что цветёт и пахнет в России. Ну, правда, одно дело -- предположить, что будет, если "русские исчезнут", на специфическом форуме, где собираются люди со специфическими интересами и вкусами, и несколько другое -- высказывать желание, чтобы "пиндосы" не просто исчезли, а испытали всякие кары, на широких общественно-политических форумах, и не один забрёдший "не туда" фрик, а толпа вполне адекватных в других отношениях людей.

Это я к тому, что всё познаётся в сравнении. Это раз. И ещё к тому, что на этом сравнительном примере мы ещё раз убеждаемся в пользе и эффективности политкорректности :)

Давно я не была на широких общественно-политических форумах, и одна из причин как раз то что утомило беспочвенное шапкозакидательство, и обсуждения в стиле "тупые пиндосы"-"русское быдло" вызывали глубокое отвращение.

Тут форум был в целом любопытный, но вот конкретно это предположение - предположение смерти людей по этническому признаку - имеет достаточно противный привкус само по себе, и мне казалось это общепризнанным дурным тоном.

вопрос " а что будет, если население РФ вдруг уменьшится на 90%" так бы не задел, думаю. В конце концов на том же форуме был много умных и не очень вполне катастрофических сценариев для всех стран.
