Which is great - I've made a conscious effort to write for English-speaking world here, but sometimes I want to use some references, and cannot because no one would get it.
I think I use Bilibin's illustrations because they work well in an icon, plus - I love them (it is the second Bilibin icon I made, I also considered his pictures for the background). I tried to make something from Vasnetsov's work, but I didn't like the result. I am not sure why - I suspect I like clarity in an icon, and Vasnetsov looks more interesting as a large painting, not in a tiny 100*100 square. Other artists whose work I used in icons are Botticelli and Ciurlionis - my favourites.
I was thinking at one point to make something with Alice in Wonderland - the Russian animated movie that I like way more that Disney's one, but, yep, couldn't find caps.
