This is sadly all too true. I need to get a new printer, and have been looking into how much ink costs for various different kinds - only to be told that it's probably cheaper to get a new printer every time than bother replacing the ink cartridges. The waste is absolutely criminal. Our TV is twenty-something years old, and I am putting off getting a new one for as long as possible, because I know there's nothing around nowadays made with that kind of longevity.
