from the book I am reading
Mar. 17th, 2007 10:35 pm(which is The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker)
They say that Ian Fleming called his mother "M". That makes the casting of Judy Dench as M in the last Bond movies even more ingenious (and how much do I want a separate M movie? than much!), and the dynamic between M and Bond ...well... interesting. Especially in the last movie.
in another moment the author notices goes that although in an archetypal happy ending we have hero and heroine united, in many American classical stories (in books and movies) we have two men standing side by side instead: Star Wars (ep. IV), The magnificent Seven, The Last of the Mohicans, etc. Which, to the author's opinion means that American culture has an endemic immaturity to it. But it can also mean that it's gay. ;)
(ok, I simplified the arguments a lot)

Date: 2007-03-18 05:13 am (UTC)You mentioned the archetypal ending with two male heroes and this reminded of something else. I don't know if you're familiar with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the ending is kinda similar to the final alley scene in Angel. The final scene has Butch and Sundance hiding from people who'd like them dead. We know and they know they are going to be killed. They bicker about where they'll travel next, run out of hiding to try and get their horses. The action slows down and we hear rifle fire and it all ends on a still shot of Butch and Sundance running.
I don't remember their characters well enough to stretch the Angel and Spike comparison. But they do bicker awfully well. And fight over the same feisty lady (who leaves them in the end). And obviously go down fighting.
Ok, I don't remember why I brought this up. Bad scatter brain, no cookie.

actually we can see it as another example of "two man standing" end - even if they not really standing here.
