(no subject)

Half of the yesterday we spent cycling and sitting in the park, reading books and looking at geese. Then, of course was the cycling back home, after which I felt not so dead as two weeks ago. Still, cannot go uphill if it is long and/or steep.

I continue reading The Woman in White, and find the evilness of sir Persival Glyde and Count Fosco very boring.

Recently we watched an X-files episode “Arcadia.” It’s season 6, and even though I usually have no idea about names of the episodes and their placement in seasons in X-files, we have s6 DVDs (a present from a friend). Anyway, to the episode: it has a very Jossverse feeling. With the first scene of a nice clean suburban neighbourhood, and I am thinking immediately: “Hell” – after the last season on AtS, and of course I am write, and the episode brings out the demonizing of real life experiences just like it, and Olaf the troll appears (Abraham Benrubi) and I am all Yay! And Mulder and Scully are playing the married couple, and Mulder is horrible at it, and I am Yay! again.

Unrelated to this: I found this article recently, and it was fun to read, but I cannot comment if it is true or not – both the overview of Russian LifeJournal (Russian in the sense of the language it is written in), and the reasons behind suggested common traits. May be one – saying that most of the other lj users have a dozen or two of friends tells me that he’s never seen fandom (any fandom) LJs.

Oh baby, this is going to be fun. [gobi attempts to roll up shirt sleeves and remembers that she's not wearing any... shirt sleeves that is]

Several months ago I tried to put my thoughts on this very subject into semi-coherent form and failed. So this essay is rather intriguing.

Whenever I tried to venture out into the Russian LJ world, I always came running back with the tail between my legs. It's kind of scary out there. From my limited experience, I agree with his first two points: 1) an older average age of the users; 2) the predominance of adult (and male) professionals . It makes sense, of course, given the socioeconomic conditions. Although I have randomly come upon some younger Russian anime fans musing about their sex lives.

I once found an expatriate community and after reading several discussion threads, I started to feel intellectually deficient. I mean, I'd never dream of being able to construct arguments like the ones I've seen over there. Of course, one should never exclude possible posturing :)

saying that most of the other lj users have a dozen or two of friends tells me that he's never seen fandom (any fandom) LJs.

Exactly. He says that it's a distinctly Russian thing to have a huge friend's list and what he calls, greater interconnectivity. Obviously, he doesn't have much experience in the fandom world. And actually, I've observed just the opposite: compared to fandom blogs, Russian LJs are much less interconnected.

Also, I have a tiny grudge with the Russian LJers. They took up all the cool usernames I was interested in. And some accounts have been abandoned and have never been used, while the usernames remain occupied.

Russian LJ appeared on my radar rather late, and yes, when I venture there I feel rather uncomfortable. It’s like another world that makes little sense to me. I do keep an eye on several communities there – language and history related, they provide interesting links sometimes, but otherwise – I don’t know. I also think that here (at least lj I know of) the balance between personal posts and those of “general interest” is better, but I don’t know much about it.

I found another link about it, more specific, but with the same ideas.

I think this is a big part of it, really – from what I’ve seen.

And usernames – yes, I didn’t have a problem with mine, but once, after a discussion about cool usernames in [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana’s lj, I tried to think of lj names I’d like if I didn’t have mine, and yes, most of them were taken and put in the empty journals. (which also suggests that I am not as original as I’d like to be)

She did? I had a small confusion regarding her whereabouts until I got that you refer to the past, not to the present. ;)
