Mai & Suki (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
I’ve been writing all kinds of little pieces and meta and stuff, and this is the one I finished first. Bits about friendship between two secondary characters, one of which started in the story as a villain, basically. Each one has her own character arc, smaller than main characters, each on is awesome, and the friendship between them that basically builds after the events of TV show is an unexpected gift for me and one of the reason I love the Avatar comics.
It's mostly interesting for those who watched it, so under the cut:
They met in a fight that Suki and Kyoshi warriors lost to Azula, Mai and Ty Lee. But the next time Suki sees her is when Mai’s saving their lives. Mai’s not really aware of Suki at all, and they meet at some point around coronation.
We don’t really know where Mai was in prison, but I choose to think – together with Ty Lee and other Kyoshi warriors near Capital city. It’s just makes sense logistically to me.
By the time of meeting in Ba Sing Se they are friendly and play pai sho. I guess being in prison for saving Zuko’s and their lives helped somewhat with Mai’s acceptance with Team Avatar.
Pai sho is not only a popular game though. It was quite often was connected to White Lotus on the show. So while the girls are playing, Iroh is secretly consider it an entrance exam to the order. Someday, Suki will be the Grand Mistress of White Lotus. (yes, I can dream).
Comics continue imply that the friendship was developing while we didn’t see our girls.
In The Promise Mai says she asked “friends” for help – meaning Kyoshi warriors agreed to be Fire Lord’s personal bodyguards because she asked them to. That’s very good friends, I’d say.
Next time we see Mai in Smoke and Shadows. She meets with Ty Lee, she goes with Kyoshi warriors to protect Zuko and his family, and another Kyoshi warrior calls her and Ty Lee “Sisters”. She is not a stranger there.
Suki knows where Mai lives, and offers to tell her address Zuko, if needed.
In a scene afterwards Zuko talks to Suki about Mai and TomTom. He askes whether Mai ever told her what happened in Omashu, and Suki confirms that she did. I find that little exchange interesting since it shows that Mai at some point told that story to Zuko, and then to Suki – they do all talk when we are not seeing them! And Mai tells her friends stuff about her life. And also, that Zuko expects that Mai and Suki talk about all kinds of things.
Which means that we can safely assume that Mai and Suki became friends in their own right. Mai hangs out with Kyoshi warriors, Suki and Ty Lee, practices with them, talks with them. Refuses to wear uniform by saying that the last time she tried it, bad things happened, but everyone knows that she just finds it too cheerful. They also go to spa and do book club, where they read the worst books they could find and mock them.
